The History of the Palio:
The Palio di Siena is not only an evocative event organized for tourism, but also the life of the Sienese people over time, in its various aspects and sentiments.
The Palio has ancient origins, with some rules still valid today since 1633, the year in which it is documented with certainty that the first Palio was run with horses, as it still is today, with uninterrupted continuity.
The city is divided into seventeen Contrade (neighborhoods), with boundaries established in 1729 by the proclamation of Violante of Bavaria, Governor of the City. Each Contrada is like a small state, governed by a Sedile (seat) led by the Prior and led in the “giostra” by a Captain, assisted by two or three contradaioli (members of the same neighborhood) called “mangini” or “tenenti.”
The Contrada has a church, called the “Oratorio,” within its territory, with an adjoining official headquarters. It has a museum housing all its heritage: memorabilia, victory banners, costumes for the Contrada (the Contrada’s pageant)โthose still in use, many of which are ancientโflags, archives, and everything related to the life of the Contrada itself. The Palio di Siena is an experience not to be missed.
